Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett broke ground on Friday September 11 for the creation of an Elegant Corridor, which will lead to and away from the city of Montego Bay.
The beautification project will take place along the Pillars (east of Lilliput) to Montego Bay main road, and encompasses the Rose Hall main road and Queens Highway. It is a vital traffic artery that conveys people and goods to and from the city of Montego Bay. Traffic figures show that over 16,000 vehicles are driven along the road daily.
The Tourism Minister says the project, which is facilitated by the Tourism Enhancement Fund in collaboration with private sector partners, is part of the drive to improve Jamaica’s tourism infrastructure and will “transform the roadway into a thing of beauty…an attraction in its own right.”
The main features of this Elegant Corridor will be the introduction of lighting, in addition to the landscaping of verges and medians along its length. The Jamaica Public Service Company will be carrying out the lighting works at a cost of J$200 million.
The landscaping project has been put to public tender, and work is scheduled to be completed before the start of the winter tourist season.
