The Jamaican team of Alyssa Mullings, Lauren Mahfood, Brooke Burrowes, Mary Mahfood and Ericka Robertson won the silver medal in the team competition of the 2010 Walkers Caribbean Junior Squash Championships, which was held this week in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
Alyssa Mullings, who took the Under-13 title earlier in the week, defeated Larissa Wiltshire 11-5, 8- 11, 11-2, 11-4 in the final of the team competition, but her teammates Lauren Mahfood, Brooke Burrowes, Mary Mahfood and Ericka Robertson all lost their matches and Guyana posted a 4-1 win over Jamaica to take the title.
However, Jamaica’s second place finish marks an improvement over last year’s performance when the junior girls team finished third. “Overall, I am pleased with how our girls performed in the team competition because we came with a goal of reaching the final and playing for the gold medal,” said national junior coach, Karen Anderson.
“When I look at the ages of most of our players and the quality of squash that they are playing at this point, I definitely think we can win the team title and several more individual titles at this completion in the future,” she added.
The boys team, which finished in sixth place also improved on their 2009 showing when they finished in last. The team of Josh Mahfood, Cameron Anderson, David Lawrence, Julian Morrison and Ashante Smith put up a hard fight but were eventually defeated by Bermuda 3-2.
“The boys have made considerable progress over the last 12 months and as a result they had a better finish this year than in 2009 and we will be building on this foundation to get even better results in the future,” Anderson said.
